GEEK SPEAK ALERT: Mouse Trapping, Lock-In Site

UPDATES:
-------
I will continue to OCCASIONALLY post updates of interest. There are whole
web sites devoted to listing current software versions (see OCCASIONAL
Favorite WEB SITE, below).

REMEMBER FOLKS you've got the Software Update Control Panel [Apple
Menu/Control Panels/Software Update] - (covered in U&O #3). Unless you
really LIKE to do things the OLD FASHIONED WAY, forget all the URLs and
hassle of downloading most Apple updates, and just use Software Update!

TechTool Deluxe 2.5.6
NOT TechTool'Pro' - 'Deluxe' is what you get when you buy an Apple
Service Contract.
<http://www.micromat.com/deluxe/index.html>

Apple Theater Mode Update
You only MIGHT need this if you have an iMac, or an Apple Studio Display.
Check the read me.

UNPREDICTABLE READER FEEDBACK

Just the usual Accolades (Thanks!)

** OVERLOOKED AND UNDERUSED ***
-- Terrible tales of misunderstood and unknown features. --
------------------------------------------------------------
Start up from a CD.

If you've never lived or worked in the Windows world, you probably don't
realize what a big deal this is. THEY CAN'T DO THIS!! Or at least, they
haven't been able to until VERY recently. Mac users have enjoyed the
ability to 'boot' from a CD for many years. If your hard drive goes bad
or your System Folder is severely damaged and your Mac won't start up,
you can try starting your Mac from the CD. Unless you've got MAJOR
hardware trouble, your Mac will always startup from the System CD that
came with it. These days 'the cd' that comes with a new Mac is called
either a 'Software Install' disk or a 'Software Restore' disk; you may
have both. They do slightly different things, which you can read about
in the HELP CENTER. Just go there and search for 'software restore'. I'm
quite sure those CDs have gone by other names in the past, but though I
like to tell stories, I'm no historian.

[I continue to be AMAZED at all the great stuff in the HELP CENTER. The
next time you think about calling your trusty consultant, or asking your
local Mac friend at a MUG, or dropping in to your nearest APPLE STORE and
posing a query to the MAC GENIUS, just type in a few words and search the
HELP CENTER. THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE. AND THE ANSWER MIGHT BE IN THE HELP
CENTER.]

Boot from the CD and often you can then access your damaged hard drive.
You might be able to rescue some data, pull out a problem extension from
your messed-up System folder, or re-install the System. We take this
capability for granted. We OVERLOOK it. BUT DON'T. Remember, no matter
HOW BAD things are with your hard drive, you can still try to get in
there with your CD!!

If you're like me, and you've done this before, but not often, you might
try to use the keyboard command [Command] + [Option] + [Shift] + [Esc]
during startup. If you do, you'll find that your Mac still starts up from
the hard drive, or doesn't start at all if your hard drive is sick. What
the heck's going on? SAVE YOUR TIME. [Command] + [Option] + [Shift] +
[Esc] is used to Force Quit the Finder!! What's the right set of keys??
I'm such a tease! You can go to the HELP CENTER and search for 'startup
from' and see what turns up. Or, the REAL way to startup from the CD is
detailed in the SPECIAL BONUS KEYBOARD COMMANDS (below). Print it out.
Glue it to your desk. Just REMEMBER that it's there when you need it. Now
make sure you keep track of that CD!!

:-)

Know The Difference
-------------------
There's yet another email virus (technically this one is a WORM) that is
rapidly reproducing in the Wintel corporate world. It's similar to
'Kournikova' - another Microsoft Visual Basic virus... This one sends out
mail to your entire address book and then launches a bunch of Porn sites
on your screen. If you receive an email with a Subject of 'cool Home
Page' JUST TRASH IT.

To my knowledge these viruses only work with WINDOWS versions of a
Microsoft Outlook or Exchange mail client (and you don't use THOSE do
you?)

And That's The Difference.

OCCASIONAL Favorite WEB SITE
----------------------------
VersionTracker includes info on versions, links to download them, and a
place to rate updates and post comments. Education Mac users: take note
of some of the comments about Mac Manager and Net Manager UPDATES (above).

Dirty Little Secrets:
---------------------
Have you noticed how sometimes you go to a web site and then try to
'back' out of it using the [Back] button, AND IT DOESN'T WORK? More and
more web developers are running amok with what are becoming known as
'mouse trapping' techniques. Once they've got you in their slimey
clutches they don't let you navigate the way you want to! Sites that use
these techniques are known as 'Lock-in's.

Read about it here:
<http://www.top9.com/lockin.html>

Special Bonus Keyboard Commands
-------------------------------
START YOUR MAC FROM A BOOTABLE 'System' CD:

Restart your Mac with the CD inserted, and...

If you're lucky - hold down the [C] key until the Mac starts up from the
CD.

If you're not so lucky - hold down [Command] + [Option] + [Shift] +
[Esc]. Technically this second keyboard combo means 'Bypass the assigned
Startup Disk and cycle to the NEXT bootable VOLUME'. There is actually a
defined order that Macs do this, but of course this will depend on if you
have an internal CD-ROM or an external, and what Port it is attached to.
If you have OTHER bootable disks or devices, such as ANTIQUE SCSI
TECHNOLOGY using SYQUEST or ZIP drives, this command might cause you to
startup from one of them, instead of your CD. In that case, you can
either disconnect or turn off or remove (if removable) those other
devices FIRST, or you can keep holding the keys down, let the Mac 'skip'
them, and then remove your hands from the keyboard at exactly the right
instant when your Mac starts to look at the CD-ROM drive. DON'T WORRY
ABOUT THE DETAILS. You're not going to hurt anything, especially if your
Mac won't start. JUST TRY IT. As the Tai Chi teacher says, 'This is
SIMPLE, but it is not EASY.'

TFSB :-)
